Stock Photography
The more creative energy you put into building a solid stock photography library the greater your chances of success. Stock photography consists of existing photographs that can be licensed for specific uses. To fulfill a certain need in photography many businesses, advertising agencies, publishers, graphic artists, and others use stock photography.
A customer who uses stock photography instead of hiring a photographer can save time and money, but can also sacrifice creative control. Stock images can be presented in searchable online databases, purchased online, and delivered via download or email.
Basically images are filed at an agency that negotiates licensing fees on the photographer's behalf in exchange for a percentage, or in some cases owns the images outright. Just about everything in stock photography is now done online, especially with the newer micro-stock models like Shutterstock and iStockphot.
Stock photography is very similar to doing a shoot for a customer. It’s just that you are taking the photos in advance and you can sell the same stock photo a multitude of times. And that's what makes running a stock photography business a lucrative business to operate. Keep in mind also to get a signed model release when your photography includes recognizable people.
To be successful in the stock photography business one needs a diverse supply of images. You need to have a large supply of images in many different categories. The larger the quantity of images you have in a stock agency, the greater your earnings. It is also important to have interesting and great quality photographs since you may be competing with thousands of images.
